Safety valves are used in gas services while Relief valves in liquid services.
Is it possible to use Safety-relief valves in gas services?
If yes, how is their reaction to pressure excess, do they pop-up like safety valves or gradually open?

A safety relief valve is a pressure relief valve characterized by rapid opening or pop action, or by opening in proportion to the increase in pressure over the opening pressure ,depending on the application and may be used either for liquid or compressible fluud.
Two types of safety relief valve as below
1. Conventional safety relief valve
2. Balanced safety relief valve
Refer API 520 for more details.

API 520
a. A relief valve is a spring loaded pressure relief valve actuated by the static pressure upstream of the valve. The valve opens normally in proportion to the pressure increase over the opening pressure. A relief valve is used primarily with incompressible fluids.
b. A safety valve is a spring loaded pressure relief valve actuated by the static pressure upstream of the valve and characterized by rapid opening or pop action. A safety valve is normally used with compressible fluids.
c. A safety relief valve is a spring loaded pressure relief valve that may be used as either a safety or relief valve depending on the application.

A safety relief valve commonly used in pump discharge to prevent overpressure in discharge pipe but the pressure setting is lower than safety valve. Its also known with 'by pass valve' and normally open. Relief valve need to install in discharge pipe to minimize hazardous athmospheric vapor in facility because safety valve works only for vapor release when the pressure inclining
