Thread: Voltage drop calculation in overhead lines

  1. Voltage drop calculation in overhead lines

    Hi*

I was searching for a while to understand voltage drop calculation for overhead lines as per IEC* but as far as I found any relevant information in IEC 60364-5-52 describes in general* where reactance and resistance are predetermined or supplied by the manufacturer. But reactance in cables can be pre-calculated where as for overhead lines it varies with the distance between phases and other parameters.

So* I request anyone who share their experience on the same. I would appreciate any input other than that is referred to ANSI/NEC or any 60 Hz frequency related standards (as they are not being practiced in the place where I work ).

    thanks in advance.

    kalinath.

do it with etap* it has a component tab for that calculation for Transmission lines component.

I haven't seen any standards that states or generalized transmission line imepdance. But reference book on the other hand* states this* you can always refer to those books. On these is by JC das* I fogot the name on the book. it describes the impedance calculation.

As himmelstern said* you can use ETAP* digsilent* or any soft that provides such feature. But take note* in my place* this calculation is no longer needed. We measure the transmission line impedances.

Thank you very much for your replies.

I understand that etap and digsilent can be used for these kind of calculations.

however* i need to do these calculation for a composite line ( X kms of cable and Y kms of overhead lines) as a written format and submit to consultant for approval ( apparently they don't accept software report as main* however you should submit both and show them the both values are nearly equal).

since I couldnt find IEC standard* I used NEC guide (american standard) and converted them to 50 Hz system. As I am asking this question here* you may understand what happened with earlier one.

So* I request if any one know any relevant information regarding the same* please kindly share it.

    thanks and regards*

As i told you before* you could see the book by jc das or by nesser tleis.. About power syatem analysis.. They examples.. In doesnt matter if it is composite* you can do them separately... Why not tell the consultant to measure the line impedance? It is a lot more accurate..
