Thread: Seismic loads + sustained loads in ASME PCC-2

  1. Seismic loads + sustained loads in ASME PCC-2

    Hello*

I´ve recently started working for a company which performs repairs on pipes with composite following ASME PCC-2. We are on a case now where we also have sustained and seismic loads to be incorporated in calculations. However* what I´ve seen is that ASME PCC-2 doesn´t give any specific way of introducing those loads into formulation* but ISO 24817 does. Does anyone have any experience to share how to incorporate the loads in ASME calculation?

    Thank you!

Re: Seismic loads + sustained loads in ASME PCC-2

1/-Sustained is due to : weight (own weight * weight of liquid * insulation*..) + Pressure
the sustained for piping is governed by Sh.

Sustained is also called primary stress.

This opposed to secundary stree * created by temperature * retrains * displacement * for which the limit is higher...

    2/-Seismic = self explanatory
In piping* seismic could be regarded as an occasional stress ( as this does this occur for short periods only)

Se for instance B31.3 it clarifies this too.

Question : are you treating piping or vessels ? please state which section of PCC you are refering to so we can undwerstand and learn too
Software such as pipe stress software make this difference accordingly

Piping. It´s ASME PCC-2* part 4* non metallic and bonded repairs* mainly article 4.1* nonmetallic composite repair systems* high risk applications. This is to calculate the thickness of composite material to repair damaged components* in my case* piping.

Formulas are based on internal pressure* and Type A 3.4.3.1 and 3.4.4 also include an axial load* which indicates outside of scope for the Article...
