Hydrocarbon handling Vessel failure duration calculation due to adjacent fire

Hi all,

I am looking for a tool to estimate duration required for failure of Hydrocarbon handling Vessel due to adjacent fire. Can you please provide if any one have similar kind of tool and its working instructions. Otherwise please advise which international or recognized standards/books to be referred to develop the same.

You can estimate it quite easily using a simple spreadsheet calculation. You will need a graph of yield strength vs temperature for the vessel material in question. Then you need to determine how quickly the metal heats up. This will be a function of metal mass, the intensity and proximity of the fire, the physical properties of the hydrocarbon within the vessel and any fire mitigation methods (e.g. PSV, blowdown, deluge).

You can then assess the time taken to reach a failure temperature based on the internal vessel pressure and the yield strength graph.
