Thread: Fire and Gas Mapping Software

  1. Fire and Gas Mapping Software

    Hi,

Does anyone know of commercially available software for fire and gas mapping that does not require the use the in-house expertise of the software supplier?

If so, how easy is it to pick up and use oneself?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi

Try Detect3D from InsightNumerics. This is pretty easy to pick up with some knowledge of Fire and Gas Mapping. It also allows you to map in 3D which i don't think any of the other packages do.

Re: Fire and Gas Mapping Software

There are two (2) commercially available packages. We currently use Insight, but Micropack also has their version now. There is also Kinexis, however be aware that they're calculations are based on 2D plots, which amazes me considering both flame and gas have 3D performance criteria.

I've seen many people who know how to use 3D modeling software, but there are far fewer people that know how to evaluate the performance of flame or gas detectors using the software. Much of this is attributed to a lack of knowledge on how these detectors work, or what it takes to install them based on what the model predicts. If you're unfamiliar with how to apply NFPA 72, Appendix B.5, that's 25% of the battle as it relates to flame detectors. The other 75% for flame detectors is what make a detector see a fire, or rather not see a fire.

Many thanks. I also came across Effigy 3D software by Kenexis which also seems to be good software for this.

Re: Fire and Gas Mapping Software

    srober,
I've used "Effigy" and IT IS NOT 3D, which is my biggest problem with it. The calculated coverage area is based on a 2D plot, which for flame detection is absolutely ridiculous. I've also read their book on the design of Fire & Gas systems. They demonstrate a lack in understanding on how flame heights are calculated. They claim a 1 x 1 pan fire will generate a 50kW fire, when in reality it's closer to 132kw fire, with a flame height of 4.3 feet.

    Well said DM2!
