Thread: Pressure Vessel

  1. Pressure Vessel

Hello to all of egpet friends, i am student from Malaysia and i has been given a task from my lecturer to answer it. So here, i need someone professional in Pressure Vessel design to guide me answer that question and which clause should i refer according to the standard code in that question. As i know, most of company are used ASME BPVC VIII to design pressure vessel, and since the question asked me to refer AWS and ASTM i don't have idea which clause or section should i refer.

    Question

"Carbon steel are widely used to manufacture pressure vessel, finds out the necessary welding joints and geometry for its shell i.e. circumferential and longitudinal welds. Determine as per code either AWS or ASTM the suitable joints type as to its thickness."

I hope someone can help me.

    Thanks.

    Hello gerge22,

The question does not state diameter and thickness.

    Re: Pressure Vessel

    Dear Sir

ASME VIII Div 1 , is a code for construction of pressure vessels, AWS is for welding of structures how buildings or bridges and others .....
ASTM has specifications for many materials and others ...

So , if you want to calculate the thickness of your pressure vessel use ASME VIII Division 1 , read UG-27 thickness of shells under internal pressure.
AWS D1.1 can help to give you ideas for various types of joints , read the clause 3 of Pre-qualified joints and see the graphics.
ASME VIII div 1 uses various ASTM specifications for different materials , for example if we have an material with specification ASTM A36 (carbon steel) , ASME refers to this as SA 36 and can make certain changes within the same specification.

ASME VIII div 1 work with specification ASTM , but does not work with AWS D1.1 (that is only reference), for another form exist Standard Welding Procedure Specifications (SWPS ) of AWS , these SWPS that have been accepted by Section IX of ASME may be used provided they meet all other requirements of ASME VIII div 1. one SWPS is for a particular type of joint , type of weld, thickness , material, parameters of welding and others .....

    I hope it helps you

    Sincerely
    Joseph

    Re: Pressure Vessel

Your question is not clear,as per joint & category you may refer UW part of ASME sec VIII Div 1 around 35 pages
