K341.4.2 Radiographic and Ultrasonic Examination
(a) All girth, longitudinal, and branch connection
welds shall be 100% radiographically examined, except
as permitted in (b) below.
(b) When specified in the engineering design and with
the owner’s approval, ultrasonic examination of welds
may be substituted for radiographic examination where
Tw ≥ 13 mm (1â„2 in.).
(c) In-process examination (see para. 344.7) shall not
be substituted for radiographic or ultrasonic examination
of welds.

As an alternative to the radiographic examination
requirements above, all welds in material 1/4 in. (6 mm)
and greater in thickness may be examined using the ultrasonic
(UT) method per the requirements of 7.5.5 of Section
VIII, Division 2.

The 1/4 allowed in ASME is limited for tanks...
API 650 Annex U - This Annex provides detailed rules for the use of the ultrasonic examination (UT) method for the examination of tank seams as permitted by 7.3.2.1. This alternative is limited to joints where the thickness of the thinner of the two members joined is greater than or equal to 10 mm (3/8 in.).
API 620 Annex U - This annex provides detailed rules for the use of the ultrasonic examination (UT) method for the examination of tank seams as permitted by 5.26, R.7.6, and Q.7.6. This alternative is limited to joints where the thickness of the thinner of the two members joined is greater than or equal to 10 mm (3/8 in.).
