Thread: Question for Welding Inspectors

  1. Question for Welding Inspectors

    Hello,
    I have a question:
I have a base material group 8(8.1) welded with a material group 1(1.4). Can someone please tell me what is the range of qualification in the WPQR for this materials?
In 15614-1, Table 3, the combination between this two groups is not stated.

    Dear friend Camarradu.

For you know well about the groups of base metals is you need to look at the CEN ISO / TR 15608 table 1 it will give you lots of information about grouping of basic material

According to the standard BS EN ISO 15614-1 Ed.2004 in: 8.3.1 (Parent Material grouping)

tells us the following: Separate welding procedure qualifications are required for each parent materials or combinations parent materials not covered by the grouping system.
If one parent materials belongs to two groups or sub-groups, it Shall always be classified in the lower group or sub group.

That is going to give an example: if you have a WPS qualified for carbon steel and other stainless steel WPS qualified for being both separate, but yet in his work arises the need for welding of carbon steel with a stainless steel you with these two WPS can not perform this welding. In this case you will have to qualify a WPS part that is separate and dissimilar welding using the example:

    METAL (A): 8 [8.1] with METAL (B): one [1.4].

getting qualified with the following range: 8.1 and 1.4

8.1 only covers the metal band himself and metal 1.4 to same.

    I have helped

I believe that is not correct, mr Welder, as the original poster mentioned both base metals are covered by ISO 15608 (he indicated one is in group 8.1, the other in 1.4).
Therefore one can not speak of " parent materials not covered by the grouping system".

cammaradu, are you sure the material is in group 1.4? Could you maybe also put it under group 2 or 3?
Posting this question on the eng-tips forum may also help you.

Otherwise Id say you're only qualified to weld 8.1 to 1.4.

Therefore go to paragraph 8.3.1.3, which direct you to table 4.
There you will find the answer
