wjw_1980, the best way I´ve found to quickly obtain information about a standard, code, practice, guidelines, etc. is to read the scope, purpose, application, and exceptions sections which are at the beginning of the document.

I´d guess you don´t have API 500/505. Otherwise, you might have seen striking differences when comparing the first page of each document (1.1.1 Purpose):

API 500: "The purpose of this recommended practice is to provide guidelines for classifying locations Class 1, Division 1 and Class 1, Division 2 at petroleum facilities for the selection and installation of electrical equipment."

API 505: "The purpose of this recommended practice is to provide guidelines for classifying locations Class I, Zone O, Zone 1, and Zone 2 locations at petroleum facilities for the selection and installation of electrical equipment."

Same first page (1.1.2 Scope), the items beyond the scope of each document are not the same when compared. API 505 mentions:

• installations underground in mines
• areas for the processing and manufacture of explosives
• areas where the presence of flammable mist may give rise to an unpredictable risk and that require special consideration

while API 500 does not.

There might be other differences, it´s up to you to find them.
