UPSCALING (Geological to Simulation Grids) in PETREL

    Dear Forum Members,

Can you share any ideas about upscaling the geological model to simulation. I have a Petrel fine grid model and needs to upscale the model areally and vertically for Eclipse sim model. Basically I need to know how to do vertical upscaling so that I can preserve or capture important features in the fine scale model (lumping layers which has the same geological features). I don't want to do proportional upscaling as this might mixed different rock types in a single layer. I intend to use RQI to do vertical upscaling. But if there are other procedure, let me know.

I am a newbie in this subject. any help appreciated much. Thanks.

If you use Gocad/SKUA you may analyze the flow unit to help you design a proper upscaled model based on the reservoir properties.
This will help you preserving the vertical heterogeneity.
But since you use Petrel, I think you need CONNECT plug in to do so. Check it in oceanstore.

Thanks Tempestite for your reply. I will check if our version has the CONNECT plugin you mentioned. Appreciate for your suggestion.

Mind you that there is an upscaling bug in Petrel. Depends on which version you are using.!
