Hi,
Yes, they do not the have the same strentgh. After some accidents, Oil&gas companies usually prohibit the use of flanges made from plates, only forged flanges are allowed.
regards
Can u pls elaborate your point.
Actually i am asking this question coz of one incident in our company.
We got by mistake a wrong reducing flange (forged 1) hence has we are in a hurry and cant delay the project , we hav raised Design change note for the same to make it from the plate (by machining of course).
but the designer has accepted the DCN but has asked us to hav same thickness of new flange (prepared from plate ) thn tht of the forged 1.
Hence im little confused as the stregth of the forged flange is more , the thicness of the new flange prepared from the plate must be higher than tht.
Kindly provide me with the solution for the same
See ASME SC-VIII-Div1, APP-2(d) and APP-20.
Normally with the same material grade the strength are almost the same. The only difference is the the material are process. plates are normally rolled to shape and normally will have flatten any discontinuity in the raw material like billets. These discontinuities will be flattened during the rolling process i.e. parallel to the plate surface which can reduce the through thickness strength. while the forging was pressed to shape and the discontinuities will not normally be kept along or not necessarily parallel with the surface. unlike plates the stength property would be like homogeneous throughout the material at any stress direction.
Normally, It is same as both of them are made up of the same material grade. Plate flanges are widely accepted as an alternative to forging flanges in low-pressure applications because of few benefits like superior grain structure as compared to forging flanges, extended service life and due to normal maintenance cost as well. However, also suggest you take proper advice from forged flange supplier like CHW Forge, RD Forge, Newman Flange etc to made a better choice.
