Question Reservoir modeling software comparison--need ur inputs

    Guys,

My company is about to buy a reservoir modeling software. So far, the decision will likely fall to Petrel as no one can give any input or opinion of other modeling softwares.
My boss doesn't want to invite any one from the vendor, instead he wants objective opinion from the users.

I heard that GOCAD-SKUA is a lot better than Petrel, but I have never used it as well as with RMS, Jewel suite etc. If any of you willing to share your experience with reservoir modeling softwares compared with Petrel, I would really appreciate that.

    Thanks,
    -sw-

Betamax was arguably the better format, yet VHS won out

I'm not trying to make any linkage with specific static modelling packages, rather simply trying to illustrate that you need to factor in other criteria besides technically better - factors such as support availability, responsiveness to identified problems, availability of training, availability of staff already trained on the software (especially if you are growing), compatibility with JV models, what your users would be happiest using etc...... I'd caution against leaving the decision to a technical super-user with less thought as to how 90% of the users will interact with it vs how he/she will better be able to now model an esoteric and isolated problem

    Thanks Vinormarky,

We have actually considered those things, and that is why petrel is the potential winner.
I just wonder if anyone in this forum argue for another software, technically I hope because we already know the nontechnicals.

Petrel has a better support and much more aggressive marketing.
    I guess petrel wins.

Everyone on this forum is a Petrel user, even though SLB might not be totally happy about it

i think that is what SLB wants .... every one gets so used to petrel that they leave off other s/w and then hone in for the kill.

I am getting good support from SLB regarding Petrel and Petrel RE concern.

honnestly with more than 6 years working with Petrel and about 5 years with RMS I would prefere RMS rather than PETREL ( due to some option in gridiing and fault definition (QC)) , also due to the easy way to export the workflow to another project which can save time. but it also depend of the Fluid that you are trying to model... if it s gas or light oil .... it doesn t matter which software you use .. even a spreadsheet or material balance will be sufficient

Thanks for your comment MIROINE! This is what I want to hear.
Also thanks to all that keep this thread staying at the first page.

Come on guys, your inputs are valuable. Please share...

We are about to purchase new software too (a consulting company). We wanted to avoid going with SLB if possible because we prefer to do things differently from the herd. We haven't finalised yet but are very likely to go with JewelSuite software. I am not an experienced Petrel user, but from my brief interaction with it, JS is much simpler to use and also much faster to build a model. It may not have as many bells and whistles as Petrel, but it certainly does what we require.
