Valve Trim Material

Dear All

Recently I come across an issue related to valve trim material:

As per our approved Valve Material Specification the trim material should be 11-13% Cr steel. But as per the manufacturer data sheet the trim material is ASTM A105 + Stellite. Do this material comply with 11-13% Cr requirement? Also can anyone provide any data sheet regarding this.Please help.....

A 105 is a plain carbon steel forging. It certainly doesnot fit to your requirement of 11 to 13% chromium steel

but whether the hardfacing of stellite 6 (Cr 27-32%) on to ASTM A105 increases its chromium content?

No, the specification required 11 to 13 % chromium to cover the needs of strength, hardness and protection against corrosion. Hard facing, assuming if attempted with all practical difficulties involved in actual hard facing of a valve trim , gives only local wear resistance.The specifier will be unlikely to accept the compromise.

What kind of application that the valve serve for?

ejectors probably, right?
use 42CrMo material for welding with stellite 6, use thermanit nicro 6 wire, weld wit wig process, preheat at >300°C ...I can make you wps if you want?

one more thing...you have to be very very careful when welding stellite 6, and it's not just welding, preparing for welding also must have be done carefully...and DO expect a -----ings..cause it's damn messed up material to be welded
