I have my own consulting company for over 20 years. I wrote all the software I used for my jobs. However, if the reports were intended for the public, I always insisted my client to use "best of class" commercial package. By using commercial package, I removed the bias issue because my client's partners or public can verify my report if they desired. My points are verification and repeat-ability offset the cost of commercial packages.
