Thread: Bulk density of refractory for heater

  1. Bulk density of refractory for heater

I am trying to find a reference that will give me the bulk density of refractory used to line a stack on top of a convection box that rests on a heater (I believe). I am trying to determine the weight of the stack section with the insulting refractory for lifting by crane to replace the existing convection box.

The stack and box were originally manufactured in 1998.

I assume the density of refractory is a function of the material and temperature is has to insulate. I've seen references on a drawing calling out "ceramic fiber needle blanket 2300 deg Fahrenheit" but I am not sure that would be a representative temperature for what comes out of the stack.

Any suggestions on where to find bulk densities would be appreciated.

Re: Bulk density of refractory for heater

Process heater stacks are not lined with ceramic fiber as the flue as velocity in stack is high. they are lined with castable refractory.
The density of the refractory varies from on designer to other. In my experience* it has been 1100 kg/cu.m. But I will suggest please see the drawing to get refractory type used. Once refractory specification is known one can get the density from its datasheet. Refractories lighter than 1100 kg/cu.m density are very weak and susceptible to failure during stack erection.
    regards
