Energy Efficiency tip of the day (Oversized pumps problem)

Problem

If pumps are sized to handle peak flow or worst-case conditions, they could operate at substantially less efficient levels for long periods. Oversized pumps in applications like these tend to waste energy, and they require frequent maintenance because they operate far from their best efficiency points.

Proposed Solutions

Pump downsizing
Use variable speed drive: If the system has low static head requirements check the possibility/feasibility of installing variable speed control.
Use parallel arrangements Pony pump arrangement (small pump and large pump) :When you have intermittent pump operation, or excessive flow noise, cavitation, and piping vibrations that disappear during heavy demand periods.
Use several smaller identical parallel pumps
