Numerical Methods in Pipeline Engineering Application

I am a Master's Degree student in Mechanical Engineering with no experience in industry, yet. Currently, I am in the midst of searching a topic for my numerical methods project (involve with some MATLAB programming). I am planning to do my project in pipeline engineering. So, I appreciate if you, the industrial experts share with me on how do you apply numerical methods in real engineering application.

Numerical Methods involve with:
1. Systems of linear and non-linear equations
2. Interpolation and Curve Fitting
3. Optimisation
4. Numerical Derivative and Integral
5. ODE
6. PDE
