Although corrosion is defined as the destructive attack of a material by reaction with its environment, the term corrosion is usually reserved for the degradation of metals and alloys. Organic polymers and elastomers do not corrode like metals. They may degrade by various chemical processes including thermal decomposition, oxidation, hydroysis, breakdown of their chemical bonds by ultraviolet radiation and so on.
