    Cap Bank

    Hi All,

I have problems for the cap bank explosion. We use the cap bank to reduce the power factor not to exceed the required limitation. However, some of capacities were exploded for some reasons. Someone said that because of the harmonic issues. Can anyone give me suggestion to remedy this problems.

    Rgds,

you should install a PQ Meter for 1 week in order to find the best solution for your problem.

As raw said - install a PQ meter for a period of time. Have a look at the harmonics/events. You will find your answer quickly.

    Re: Cap Bank

If your network contains harmonics you can install a harmonic filter. Another solution is to install capacitors with a rated voltage higher than the existing ones. These solutions must be verified by knowing perfectly the quality of energy. Contact the supplier of power factor corrector to find a customized solution

    Hi,

How is the capacitor bank connected? Is the capacitor bank at distribution level or in an industrial plant? There might be certain causes for the explosion which includes:
    a. Transient Overvoltage
    b. Capacitor Energization/Switching
    c. Harmonics

The first item might be experienced when there is a ground fault located within the capacitor bank installation. The second one is when the inrush current is very large that it exceeds the rate of inrush rating of the capacitor bank. The last item is experienced when the capacitor bank is not sized properly i.e. no impedance/frequency scan conducted.

Let me know your insights here. Thanks.

    Regards,
