    Question HYSYS distillation column

    Hello, I want to Hysys simulation of a packed column, separating ethanol and water.

    The column has a total condenser and injection of live steam.

    I have data :

    Power to the column: volume flow, temperature, pressure, composition.
    Reflux: I have reflux ratio.
    Top of the Column: Only temperature.
    Colunma: I have pressure, and temperature profile given by PT100.
    Live Steam : Only pressure
    I can determine the composition of distillate and residue (this goes directly to wastewater).

    The manufacturer will give me information package.

    Variableas want to know if someone takes more to simulate steady state.


    In the reflux flow only going back to the column is known, no more distillate think I require a flow meter to determine the reflux ratio.

    In the live steam does not flow, I have only a percentage of valve opening, there are relationships that may contain the flow they would recommend me.

    Hi Ander,
    i think that you first problem is the choice of the correct Property Package.
    From the chemical components of the your case (CH3CH2OH / H2O) the situation is the following:
    1- Polar
    2- Non-Electrolyte
    3 - Interaction Parameters available
    4 - Pressure <10bar (i don't know but i presume)
    ---> NRTL or UNIQUAC
    The second problem is the estimate of diameter column (out of hysys) with the Generalized Pressure Drop Correlation with approach to flood (or approach to Maximum Operating Capacity (MOC) or Pressure Drop).


    The approach to flood is calculated by firstly using the Kister and Gill correlation to calculate the pressure drop at flooding for the selected packing (i.e. Pall Ring, stainless steel, 2 in and fixed bed hight).

    The "Packed Column Calculator" is a good software for this preliminary calculations.

    Known the hydraulic diameter column you can return to hysys with another fixed degree of freedom (diameter column)
