    Safety Zone Philosophy

    Hi all,

Is there anyone who can explain what is meant with Safety Zone Philosophy?
I believe it is something from Shell.

    Thanks and regards,
    Paul

    Re: Safety Zone Philosophy

    Hi There,
I’m a bit confused to understand the definition of Safety Zoning but this could be either:
    1) Zoning for the selection and installation of Electrical equipments i.e. classification of locations Class I, Zone 0, Zone 1 and Zone 2 (Class 1, Devision 1 and Devision 2 for US) or

    2) Toxic Zoning for Green, Yellow and Red Zones with the basic example definition for zones such as:
Green Zone (H2S free Area) - There is negligible probability for H2S presence or concentration in air <10 ppm under all circumstances
Yellow Zone (Minor H2S risk area) - A credible release of H2S could result in a concentration in air above IDLH levels in the vicinity of the process units or in the vicinity of the well.
Amber Zone (Potential Major H2S Area) – Area of facility with process units or equipments with proven design for sour service handling sour hydrocarbons with <2% of H2S.
Red Zone (Major H2S risk area) – H2S is expected to be present in the breathing zone for an area (confined space, ground level or elevated working platform) as part of normal operations at a concentration in air above the 8 hour TLV
    Or
A credible release of H2S could result in a concentration in air <650 ppm in the process units or in the vicinity of the well.
    AND
The perceived operational risk is higher than in normal operations e.g. operational risk may be perceived to be higher during start up or during periods when a facility is operating with uncertain static integrity, and therefore Red Zone operating rules may be enforced.

    Re: Safety Zone Philosophy

    Hi Fredo,

    Thanks for your response.
It is not clear to me as well.
I was called a an engineering consultant to review their proposal of an oil & gas project on this subject.
I understand that Shell was one of the partner in this project.

However, the Client project team could not explain further on this.
My experience with Safety Zone is to define safe zone(s) from fire or explosion.
This is related to facility siting.
There is no H2S involvement in this project.
The electrical hazardous classification covers the electrical apparatus specification with regard to zone 0, 1 and 2.

So it is a different subject that the client asked.

    Thanks anyway.

    Regards,
    Paul

    Hi Pwijaya,

If Shell is a partner in a project and safety zone was a subject of concern i may assume you are talking about Bab Gas project in Abu-Dhabi.
If this is the case then it is a mega sour gas field development project. In this occasion safety zoning is about toxic zoning for determination of green, yellow and red zones and operational philosophy for work in this zones.

    Regards,
    Fredo

    Hi Fredo,

    Thanks again for your response.
It is not Bab Gas Project in Abu Dhabi.

It is a gas project but no H2S in it.
So I will just proceed with fire and explosion safety zone.

    Thanks again.
