Thread: Crirical spare parts on a rig

  1. Crirical spare parts on a rig

    Hey Guys,

I have a question that I would want to ask all of you. Have any of you come across a critical spares list of a drilling rig.?
All the rigs have a critical spares inventory. I want to know what and how exactly do they make one and what goes into making one. Is it some kind of a API spec sheet for this ? I would love to see one if you guys are kind enough to upload one for me.

    Thank you.

    Hi,
Critical spares are made up of: OEM critical spares list for critical equipment+ client request for critical spares+company specified spares for critical equipment.
You nee to first and foremost identify your critical equipment, after which you can now start building your list of critical parts for those equipment before putting in quantities.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers.

    Hey Frank,

Thank you for your reply, Now here is the problem I have, How do you classify an equipment crucial. ? I mean the Mud pump is critical, the lung pump, the kelly, etc. I cannot keep each and every spare part that the OEM says as I have limited space on the rig. I was looking for a a generalized list that is crucial a format if you will, Like BOP spares, Mud pump spares, Screens, To be very fair I should have posted this topic as Critical Spares list for Well Control equipment.

    Hi,
I never come across any critical spare list from API. What we do on our rig was base on the suggestion from manual books, just like what Frank said.
You need to consider anything could shutdown the rig in case we need it. Specially when you talk about well control equipment. We generate a list also by experience from the field. You can share some critical spares between rigs.

Can you share with us a snapshot of your critical spares list. I just want to see how you have gone about arranging it.

    9September,
Noting to it really. Off the top of my head, critical equipment would be:
    1. Mud pumps
    2. Draw works
    3. Engines/ Generators
    4. Cranes
    5. BOPs
    6. Top Drive
    7. Pumps (Centrifugal pumps)
    8. Instrumentation
Yeah, don't think you need more than say at most 30 line items for each of the above or even less for some.
So, you got an excel spreadsheet. Equipment part-1st column, quantity-2nd column, Min/Max- 3rd and 4th columns, quantities in the warehouse, and then add other info as you choose.....OEM,min/max lead time for supply...etc.....
Its really not complex....whats important is that you have on that list parts that you cant compromise on .....the field guys should help you with that.....
    Hope this helps......
