Thread: Internships

  1. Internships

    Hi everyone,

This is my first post on this forum. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about global internships for Undergraduate Chemical Engineering students? I'm particularly interested in Germany, India, Canada and America.

Also, I was wondering how many fellow forum users are from the UK (Scotland)?

    Alright Rob,

I'm originally from Edinburgh (BEng + an MSc from Heriot-Watt), working in Houston now.

Your best bets for internships is either through your university careers people (I presume your department will have a specific careers person - mine did), or apply direct via the company you want. All the major O&G companies (BP, Shell, Exxon, Talisman, etc, etc) do summer intern programs and year placements.

Of your options, I imagine Germany would be your easiest bet (European free employment laws and all that), try Siemens and BASF for a head start. Not too sure on Canada and India, but having just gone through my own issues, US visas are a nightmare so companies typically aren't interested in foreigners unless you are eligible to work in the US already.

Where you studying? - I presume Edinburgh/Heriot-Watt, Robert Gordon or Strathclyde?

    Graeme

    Yep, not too bad,

That's great I almost went to Heriot-Watt and know a lot of people there. I'm studying at Edinburgh in my 4th year of a masters degree. What made you move to America? What sector are you working in? (I'm trying to make that decision at the moment).

Yes we do have a careers service but most suggestions stick to the UK as there's not a specific careers person for Engineering so I thought I'd give this forum a shot. Thanks for the suggestions.

    Rob

I graduated in 2007 and got a job in Hull at a consultancy firm - primarily oil, gas and petrochemical work. Worked there for 6 years, the last 2 of which were subcontracted to a US firm (Excelerate Energy) for a large FEED for an LNG export facility. At the end of that, they offered me a permanent job, sorted out my visa, etc. etc.

This is what the FEED was for, and what I'm still working on at the minute if you're interested.
