I am interesting in this certification. I am trying to look for the materials also.
I believe SLB pulls a page from Microsoft pay (play)book to squeeze more $$ from the users.
MSDN has the certification program for over a decade now, how many want ads demand applicants be MSDN certified.
Dear coby,
If this certificate worth anything, it would be for learning only.
to Pass , you have to spend time using the software.

It looks like the certificate can be a short cut for those without years of experiences. A certification can prove that you master the software.
master the software?
Only if you can call a mouse clicking monkey as master of the software.
Modelers and simulation engineers earn their pay with working experience, master of the software is worth the paper the cert printed on.
I agree with you. In their description, they link the specialist and expert level with 1-3 years of experiences and more than 3 years respectively. So it is normally design for those with experiences.
But I am sure that with just the mouse clicking, you can have a chance to be hired just because you have that certificate. Of course they won't expect you to behave like someone who have working experience.
I am sure that, a certificate can attract a recruter a least for an interview; also for $100 and $150 exam fees, somebody can take the risk. That's my point of view.

In us, new hires has 3 years to learn what kind of opportunities is available in the industry. Then he/she will have a series of 3-5 year rotations/assignments in each division. If he/she still survive the grind (normally after 15 years), he/she will be considered as staff and settle on asset team. If he/she plan on becoming modeler, he/she must have done a great job as geohead in his/her rotations. As for simulation engineer, he/she must have good rotation in production/facility/subsea engineering projects. The responsibility of modeler/simulation engineer is to sell the concept of reservoir development project to his/her peers, company management, partner and shareholders. Do you think those folks trust a monkey or a green horn with only a piece of paper.
If you believe that piece of paper will get you hired, you also believe in tooth fair too.
I'm not sure why there is always double post. Anyway, I'm going to overwrite it with my thoughts being a modeler/simulation engineer
To be a modeler/simulation engineer, one better has more than good fundamentals, a proven track record of successful projects and good reputation among his/her peers. Most the time, the model/simulation is not sold on technical merits alone, office politics and people skills plus a touch of salesmanship get the project on to next level.

I always have a problem with a double post.
I don't want to differentiate the Petrel or Studio certification from other certifications. I take it just like others (CISCO., PMP,.......). A certification can be a plus, It can be a good start point; You will master the software/job with practice and also the certification is not a requirement; like you said it is just a paper. I don't expect a freshman with a certification and 0-1 year experience to get a higher pay than somebody with no certificate with 3 years of experience. I just have a feeling that it can be worthy to get a certification. Talking about that certification itself, it is not an easy task; it will requires many hours of mouse clicking...
