OK, I will give you my opinion. I am a Petroleum Eng. so maybe my opinion is biased :-(

Petroleum Industry IS NOT going to disappear in the next 20-30 years. The world economy runs on OIL !!!! You can not change this fact in a short time frame (10-15 years) This means that looking and producing Hydrocarbons will go on. This means that petroleum engineers will be needed. LARGE NUMBER of Pet. Eng. today with a lot of experience are in the range of 55-60 years old. They will be retiring and someone needs to take their place.

SO, become a Petroleum Eng. and a good one, and you WILL find a job. Make sure you are GOOD, then they all will want to hire you. To be good you need a good degree and good experience. So do NOT allow a company to make you do just one job for too long. As for transfers to other groups/segments of the company to get as much experience as possible !!!!!
    Regards
