The most common hazard associated with domestic gas cylinders occurs when cylinders tip or fall over. Far more dangerous, falling cylinders have been known to become missile like projectiles, causing severe injury and damage. A higher proportion of propane, a highly explosive substance is considered unsuitable to some climatic condition due to the pressure demand. The pressure of the gas is four times higher than the locally produced cooking gas, which contains butane, a less dangerous substance.
Below are tips in handling gas cylinder
1. Use LPG cylinders in a vertical position, unless specifically designed to be used otherwise.
2. Always double check that the cylinder/gas is the right one for the intended use.
3. Before connecting an LPG cylinder to Gas Cooker, ensure that the regulator and pipe-work are suitable for the type of gas and pressure being used.
4. Close the cylinder valve and replace dust caps, where provided, when a gas cylinder is not in use.
5. Ensure that the valve is protected by a valve cap, or collar, or that the valve has been designed to withstand impact if the cylinder is dropped.
6. Do not drop, roll or drag gas cylinders on the ground.
7. Do not apply grease or oil to the regulator or gauges.
8. Check expiry date
