Can anyone provide any information about Steam Rings. Steam Rings are used to stop leakage from the Flanges of CCR Reactors and Heat Exchangers etc.
1. What is Configration of Steam Rings?
2. What is the Design criteria

Not so much idea about the topic. You can have a look to following link if it can be helpful to you.

Thanks for quick reply
I, serarched these links already and did,nt find any required information about steam rings.
What is a Steam Ring and how it works?
As I understood if I am wrong please correct me
Seam Ring is basically a pipe bend in circular shape and fixed around the Flange with supports. Steam flows in pipe and temperature of the environment near the outside surface of the Flange is increased to reduce the temp. gradient between flange and environment thereby to minimize the thermal expansion of the flange. In this way flange and gasket will remain at its position and leakage will be minimized.
If anyone knows more in detail please share
Dear Kathrine,
Steam rings are basicly designed around the flanges of CCR Reactors, flanges of Heat Exchangers and flanges of Piping Systems and around any part where there is a chance for leakage of hydrogen. And we know that any leakage of hydrogen to atmospheric pressure will cause self igniting of the hydrogen, and feeding of steam will damp that self ignition of the hydrogen.
So, we recommend to install a steam rings around the flanges of equipment and piping systems to overcome the self ignition of hydrogen during leakage.

Dear Abdel Thanks for correction.
Can you please suggest me some hand book to design steam rings? is the steam supplied around the flange continously all the time or there will be some instrumentation to detect the hydrogen and then steam will automatically be fed around the flange to mitigate H2 ignition? can you explain its configuration?
Dear Kathrine,
Up to that moment there no available handbook for design of that steam rings, I will try to search. The process/utility/mechanical/piping engineer with help of safety engineer can be capable to make a sizing for that easy piping system. It just a ring of small NPS furnished with holes directed to the portions of the mating flanges where we expect leakage, and connected to subheader comes from steam header.
We did a lot of designs for steam rings which depends on main pipe steam header branched to subheaders with size about NPS 2, branched to NPS 1 and 3/4 NPS ended with a complete ring around the flange, and each ring is furnished with flanged (or unions) connections to facilitate dismantling during maintenance and shutdown periods.
The steam can be fed and operated manualy at emergency or can be automatically fed by such control system connected with a heat detectors.
Dear Abdul,
Actually i ,ve to design a steam rings for flanges of CCR(Continous catalytic Regereative)Reactors. CCR Reactor is a very huge reactor with 17 floors. At each floor, there are many flanges of the reactor, so it will be cumbersome to provide detection system for each flange to operate steam rings in emergency. I also have to design a deluge system for CCR Reactor. Is it be feasible to use the fire detection system of deluge system to work for steam rings also. Can you please provide me some material relating to steam rings and deluge system.
Thanks in advance for your co-operation
Abdel Halim Galala,
Friend, can we have some photographs or diagrams of such arrangement?
Hi katharine ,
Currently I am working on snuffing steam ring design.
Can you please help me out with some design calculaitons
Thanks and Regards
Can anyone let me know about the Steam ring design? Is it correct to install or fixed by drilling in SS flanges of rectors?
please share your experience.
