    ASME U Certification

    Dear All,

    I would like to know

    1) if Stress Relieving Furnace should be available in-house (when it cannot be subcontracted) at the time when ASME U Review Audit for Certification is scheduled.

    2) Is a Quality Control Manager required in addition to QC Engineer for a ASME U certified workshop or a QC Engineer is sufficient

    Thanks in advance.

    Sriram,
For the accreditation of the "U" stamp you need to demonstrate capability to design and manufacture fully in line with the ASME rules.
For this purpose you would need to design and manufacture of an exhibit/demonstration pressure vessel. The Authorised Inspection Agency "AIA" you hired to be the authority overseeing your design and manufacturing activities should be able to assist in drafting all necessary procedures, and the quality manual.

1.0 For the purpose of the demonstration vessel you would not need to design and manufacture a pressure vessel where you will have apply all the manufacturing procedures, hence why not chose a pressure vessel with small diameter, material, thickness and design conditions not mandating PWHT, and your worries are over.

2.0 The ASME mandate a competent responsible for quality person a manger or quality engineer designated by the company should be sufficient. Whoever is used he must demonstrate competence or having people reporting to him with appropriate competence in the ASME code

Use the AIA as they are very familiar with the process, and you would have to hire one anyway.

    Hope this helps you

    Re: ASME U Certification

    Thanks ZABLADZ for your reply.

We are starting a new fabrication workshop which we want to get ASME U Certified. We are procuring machinery for the same and wanted to know if PWHT facility should be available during ASME review.

I have been trying to tell my management that the PWHT facility is not required during review as PWHT is not required for the vessel we will be fabrication which will also be used as a demo vessel. So PWHT facility can be arranged later on.

    Thanks again.
