Thread: Any hydrogen detectors for hydrogen leakage detection in the refineries?

  1. Any hydrogen detectors for hydrogen leakage detection in the refineries?

Could you please advive me an issue: about hydrogen detectors for hydrogen leakage detection in the refineries.
Does it really needed? Any of hydrogen detectors installed at which refineries as examples please?

    Flame Detection
Any hydrogen risk on the site shall have potential fire locations monitored by Ultra-violet flame detectors (not Infra-red units). Target and location of "Hydrogen fire detection" shall be as follows:
High temperature (above 220 deg C) and high pressure (more than 42 barg)
Large pipe size (larger than 8 inch flanges).
The coverage of hydrogen detection shall be max. 30 m.

    An internet source says:
"Hydrogen leak detection systems may be required by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) or may be installed as a means for enhancing safety. Leak detection can be achieved by providing hydrogen (or flammable gas) detectors in a room or enclosure, or by monitoring the internal piping pressures and/or flow rates for changes that would suggest a leak is present in the system. Other methods include providing detectors in close proximity to the exterior piping or locating hydrogen piping within another pipe and monitoring the annulus for leaks."

Re: Any hydrogen detectors for hydrogen leakage detection in the refineries?

Dear just make it clear, would you like to detect gas leakage before fire ocurs or you are interested in fire (UV detector)?

Search term LEL or Combustible Detectors and are available in market by all leading manufactures. I am using it for my H2 plant for fertilizers but not in refineries.........

You need to install many detectors based on area, local wind direction, construction site etc....... when ever you get alarm in your Operator interface system for any of the detector - gives you near by location for Hydrocarbon or Hydrogen leakage.........

    Dear amshah,
We are requested to provide UV flame detectors for any hydrogen risk on site with potential fire location.
We are required to provide only UV flame detectors for the following location as hydrogen leakage detection. It means any hydrogen risk on the site shall have potential fire locations monitored by Ultra-violet flame detectors (not Infra-red units). Target and location of "Hydrogen fire detection" shall be as follows:
    - High temperature (above 220 deg C) and high pressure (more than 42 barg)
    - Large pipe size (larger than 8 inch flanges).
    - The coverage of hydrogen detection shall be max. 30 m.
Could you please share what you have at your site: Hydrogen detectors or UV flame detectors for detect hydrogen (in both case: detect hydrogen gas leakage before fire occurs and also are interested in fire (UV detector).
Please advise your experience. Many thanks
    Tan

Re: Any hydrogen detectors for hydrogen leakage detection in the refineries?

Dear we have installation or Electrochemical LEL sensors, which detect presence of explosive material not fire.

H2 , Methane and other Hydro carbons fall under the same. And if i am not wrong then UV flame detectors are used to detects presence of H2 flame ( not view able easily in day light).

Hence H2 leakage sensing and then presence of fire due to hydrogen leakage are two different things.............

    Dear amshah,
My understanding is that you do not use specific hydrogen detectors at your site (either fixed or portable H2 detector one), you only use the common Electrochemical LEL sensors.

Is it correct. Thanks for your confirmation for my refertence.

    Dear amshah,
Thanks for your reference. But I stll need to know: Any of hydrogen detectors installed at which refineries in the world as examples please?
