i'd think easiest switch with your background would be to production technologist or facilities engineer... PTs doing lots of staff some RE's are involved with.
why don't you try any distance learning degrees for MSc in Petroleum engineering? Heriot Watt does have it and i am sure there should be something in Australia... i'd think you have experience already...
