Study of emergency shutdown system

Dear Friends,

Can any body please explain methodology which should be adopted to carryout adequacy study of existing Emergency Shutdown System (ESD) installed in the plant. That is..

1. What should be content of the study?
2. Which documents shall be referred for adequacy study of existing ESD system?
3. What are the important criteria to be considered while carrying out the study?
4. On which factors/point we should focus to carry out an effective study?

Please help in this regards if any one have methodology or any article or any previous study report available.
