Question Tank Cooling Water Spray Application Rates

    Hi to everyone,

I was wondering which standards are used in other Oil Tank Farms about Tank Cooling Water Spray Application Rates.

    1) For API 2030 (American Petroleum Institute) (August 1998)

    7.2.1 Exposure Protection:
    In general , suggested application rates are between 0.10 and 0.25 gpm/ft2 (4.1 and 10.2 lpm/m2) These suggested rates are experience-based and include a safety factor of 0.05 gpm/ft2 (2.0 lpm/m2)

    2) For IP Part 19 (Model Code of Safe Practice Part 19: Fire precautions at petroleum refineries and bulk storage installations) (2nd edition - January 2007)

    Annex D Typical Application Rates
Table D.1: Minimum application rates for water based systems
Fixed [Note 3] and floating roof [Note 4] tanks containing Classes I, II and III liquids Application rate: 2 lpm/m2)

    3) What about NFPA Standards?

    4) Which design ojectives / standards are you using in your Oil Tank Farms for Cooling Water Spray Application Rates?

    NFPA15 suggests 4.1 lpm/m2 too.

In absence of heat radiation calculations from Fire Risk Analysis, we recommend a minimum specific cooling flowrate of 36 l/min per linear metre of circumference, both for floating roof tank and fixed roof tank, indifferently from the product contained, and height of the tank.

NFPA said 4,1 lpm for minimum requirement, for oil tanks watersprinkler it recommended to use ring system because deluge system is not subjected to tank cooling. I've made watersprinkler design and calculation based on API 2030 maybe you interest?

    yes please do send.

I have posted another thread in the mechanical section but never received a reply. I would appreciated if you could send me your workings.
