  1. Modelling Tank Settlement using COADE CAESAR

    Dear all Member

    Could you give me explanation to model tank settlement on CAESAR?
    The case is like this if D1=(0,0.26,10.75)= Displacement of Tmax, D2=(0,0.13,6.71)=Displacement of Toperating and D3=(0,-0.12,-0.71)=Displacement of Tdesign minimum, and how do we decided the value of D4=Displacement of Tank settlement and how do we make the modeling by CAESAR?
    If you have CAESAR file of Tank settlement case, would you mind sharing it with me?

    I Think,Tank Settlement shall be analysed as per API 653 -APdx - B, is settlements of foundation is measured.

    ..Just for my understandaing, could someone explain the following please:

    1/-Is tank settlement a primary or secondary stress or load ?
    In other words shall we include the tank settlement within Sh or within Se.
    Knowing that Se > Sh
    Sh if the B31.3 alloawable for weight, pressure...all primary load
    Is there a margin ( adiitional factor k > 1 , for instance 1.22 or 1.3 ) shall be apllied , eg. = allowable is then (k.Sh)

    My opinion (instinct ) tells me settlement is an applied displacement and should be considered as a thermal load

    I might be wrong ..but I am stating my opinion ..and I am awaiting for comments or corrections..and thanks for that

    2/-Most of the settlement occurs during tank hydrotest , when the piping is not yet connected to tank nozzles
    So the remaining settlement ( residual is small). correct or not?

    my understanding is:

    1/ to assess a tank , AN EXISTING tank I mean you use appendix B of API 653

    2/ to assess the piping stress, the supports ( where you might need spring supports, to assess the loads on the tank nozzles..then you have to conduct pipe stress studies with Caesar or something similar ..and include the settlement in the loads
    Stress according to B31.3
    Tank nozzle loads according to appendix P of API 650 ..Which is already implemented in Caesar

    Well, my opinions only ..probaly someone can correct or confirm

    It is a stress given by strain.
    We are more familiar with stress given by force. I don't know for which reason engineers forget there are two distinct lessons in Strength Mechanics.
    And it is true that in real life it's easy to get confused with such terminology: when you bend a paper clip back and forth until it breaks, you are applying strain... next question would be "but I need force to do it!".

    Strain gives secondary stress. For this reason, strange enough for a normal engineer, "settlement is an applied displacement and should be considered together with thermal loads".

    Yes, in practice the remaining settlement ( residual) is small, let's say one-third of total.
    The only problem might be the EPC company that wants (wishes!) to have hydrotest with all piping connected to tank.
    So just obtain from them (impose to them!) the normal procedure- hydrotest should be carried out without piping connected. Connect piping after hydrotest, when the major part of settlement is consumed.

    Also, has anyone of you modelled air cooler in Caesar II; If he can share Caesar model with air cooler, I shall be grateful. Also, please attach drawings so I may understand at which locations have the restrains been modelled.
