    designing of Bubble column reactor

    Hello respected members...

i got a new project on designing of bubble column reactor, which i certainly have no idea how to deal with it...

in tower the carbon dioxide is reacting with alkali water (NaOH+H2O) forming carbonic acid. The CO2 absorbing in alkali water is 1-5%. The remaining carbon dioxide would be in water. The carbonic acid then react with sodium hydroxide to form sodium carbonate.

Alkali has the PH of 11 to 12 .. which changes on being neutralization to 6 to 7.
This is a counter current operation. Gas is entering from bottom and alkali water from top..

the object is to find the design parameters and then
    1. length of reactor
    2. diameter of reactor
    3. retention time for gas
    4. liquid hold up
    5. Gas hold up

    the given data is
pressure difference in column is about 3 to 4 psi
water flow rate 2 meter cube/hour
1 meter cube of water carrying 3 kg of alkali....

i will be really thankful to every one who can guide me through the design process of this bubble column reactor...

    1. Is it a commercial/industrial project or academic?
    2. How did you come up with the press. diff. in the reactor?

    dear mobek..

it a sort of industrial project given to my sir, so he asked me to do as i am trainee there.
and the pressure difference , he told me that it can be 3 to 4 psi in the tower....

    Hi akill3r,
Check this textbook, although it was published in 1982 but still good (simple & practical): Catalytic Reactor Design by Tarhan, M. Orhan.

    Good luck.

akill3r: Reactor systems are not that simple thing to design. it'd take so many hours to do it. the book is available on Amazon.com (

thank you mobek... i know its not simple to design a reactor system. i am spending my whole leisure to read about it. well i am getting not enough ... thank you for giving me another hint . I hope i could find it in any library in my city or country.... thanks a lot respected member
