One of the first corrosion problems relating with welding is the intergranullar attack in the ZAT (zone affected thermally). The carbon is combined with chrome to form chromo carbides in the grain boundary at 425-900ºC. The area nearest to the carbides has lower chrome amount. When the carbides net is continue, the zone impoverished in chrome around the grains coulb be selectively attacked, resulting in intergranullar corrosion. This phenomenon is called stainless steel sensibilization.
ASTM A262 gives you the test to be done to demonstrate if stainless steel is sensibilizated.![]()
