Thread: Cresol Separation (Asking)

  1. Cresol Separation (Asking)

Hi for everybody, I am seeking a papers for separation of cresol isomers, i have a reference of a paper called Separation of cresol isomers by distillative crystallization written by Lie-Ding Shiau, Chih-Hao Huang and Keng-Fu Liu, I shall be very pleased if somebody may halp me with this paper or similar

    Thanks in advance

    Dear Carboglass,
what is your feed composition? and what products you desire

  5. Dear Aseptman, the feed composition in mol fraction is:
    P-cresol 0.5
    O-cresol 0.2
    M-cresol 0.3

The products desired are the three and these must be separated in three stream with at least 90% Molar of each one, this is an exercise for academic purpouse only

    Dear Carboglass,
The boiling points at atm pressure of cresol isomers are:
    Meta Cresol 202.8
    Para Cresol201.8
    O cresol 190.8

    CONTD..
Considering that your purity requirements are only 90% each only distillation alone is sufficient to separate these three.
    So you need 2 columns
First assuming direct split will give you O Cresol at top and M+P C's at bootoms
Second will then seprate these two.
Note that second column will need considerable stages and reflux.
Other option is to make use of deifference is meling points of the Meta and Para . There you can use melt crystallization in place of second column.
But the purity levels that you seek can be aceheived by distillation alone so 2 column system is best option

Thanks a lot my friend foe your quickly response, I was reviewing some papers and other techniques to separate these cresols, using liquid extraction, but I think that these alternatives introduce a new component which may contaminate the system and need more equipments. On more time thanks for your help, regards
