    SYSTEM 7 Process Explorer®
The Evolution of a Revolution in Process Simulation Software

The SYSTEM 7 Process Explorer® graphical user interface provides quick and efficient development and simulation of process flowsheets consisting of streams and unit operations. Output is made available in Process Notes™ for each stream and unit operation that can be docked as desired for ongoing analyzes. A detailed custom report can be exported to Microsoft Excel with all inputs and outputs available in Microsoft Access format.

Creating a Flowsheet: A flowsheet is created by opening a flowsheet and clicking on feed streams, product stream, and unit operation icons in the SpeedDraw Tools Pallet and clicking on the Process Explorer workspace. This process can be repeated until all of the desired feed streams, product streams and unit operations have been placed on the flowsheet. Then the stream drawing tool is selected to connect feed streams, product streams, and unit operations to complete the flowsheet development. Alternatively, the SpeedDraw ‘arrow’ icons can be clicked on to create a stream and the next unit operation or product stream as selected in the SpeedDraw Tools Pallet.
Running a Simulation: Once the flowsheet and data has been entered, select the Start icon to run the flowsheet simulation analysis. The streams in the flowsheet will change to green for gas, blue for liquid, and orange for multi-phase to indicate the calculated phase of each stream as a result of the simulation run. By moving the mouse pointer over any stream or unit operation, a Process Note appears with all important results displayed in miniature spreadsheet format. The process notes disappear when the mouse is moved away.
Process Explorer Interface: The SpeedDraw Pallet provides all flowsheet development and navigation tools for quick data entry. Zoom In/Out and Zoom Window buttons are provides for adjusting the zoom level along with an indication button of % zoom which can also be clicked on to specify the precise zoom level. The top section of the SpeedDraw Pallet provides 8 directional arrows to create a stream from the currently highlighted unit operation to the unit operation selected in the pallet. Feed streams, product streams, and unit operations can also be created by selection in the pallet and then clicking on the Process Explorer graphical user interface. The stream tool allows for connecting intermediate and recycle streams to complete the flowsheet development. A freeform label with a border can be created for highlighting sections of a flowsheet, providing custom labeling, and displaying graphical bitmap images.

Datasheets are at the heart of the design, engineering and procurement of plant equipment. Paper is increasingly giving way to digital information, and MS Office is often the medium for ad-hoc or formatted reports and specifications. In order to realize the potential benefits in increased productivity and reliable data management, the data should lend itself to automatic data exchange with source and target applications. In keeping with this trend, the API Spec Database will include a library of digitally enhanced API datasheets (courtesy of Intergraph) that are not only compliant with Intergraph’s SmartPlant ® offerings, but can also be easily integrated with other applications. These datasheets preserve the layout of the original API specifications, while adding significant electronic enhancements. By basing the data sheets on common commercial platforms and tools and using standard XML, EPCON International and Intergraph have solved the automatic data exchange problem with the API Spec Database. This provides one familiar data sheet standard but with a flexible interoperability solution for automatic data exchange.

The GPA Data Bank with the stored pure component properties and the comprehensive GPA VLE, LLE, and VLLE mixture data is the ideal tool for fitting reliable model parameters. Fit GPA data to gE-models or equations of state, for the development of group contribution methods and for fitting the required interaction parameters for process simulation. It is especially helpful for the critical examination of model parameters prior to process simulation. For the development of reliable group contribution methods with a broad range of applicability nearly all available information covering a large temperature and the whole concentration range for a variety of compounds very different in size can be used.

    Thermophysical Property Estimation
The ARTIST software provides estimation of pure component properties using the molecular structure. It incorporates a large number of different group contribution methods for a multitude of different properties. Using a special coding scheme for molecular structures, ARTIST is able to take into account the chemical neighborhood of the individual groups thus implementing chemical know-how. To ensure the correctness of the algorithm, the program has already been tested for years during the development of the well known UNIFAC and mod. UNIFAC methods. ARTIST utilizes a user-friendly Windows graphical user interface. Results can be copied to the clipboard or automatically sent to Microsoft Excel™ for further processing.
