can any body let me know what are problems that can be regularly faced in crude distillation unit? like one problem desalter tripping due to presence of water in the crude...

Naapranam, i thought the desalting process needs injection of 4 - 6 vol.% of water in the crude oilwhich is then separated in the desalter with the help of electrostatic field. couldn't really understand ur comment. other common isssues are related to corrosion in coloumn overhead or exchanger trains, fouling of hot train exchangers, heat recovery

i don't fully understand ur question but common operational problems may be:
controlling topping tower top pressure and temperature for lighter crude,controlling the Vacuum of VDU,clogging the filter of suction side of a pump,product degradation due stripping steam,increase of level of water in desalter-these are the routine problems in crude distillation and vacuum distillation unit
