White spirits works good. Diesel is the best. But if you want to be on the safe side then use simple green degreaser.

    Hello to all of you.
I'm a specialist in pipes for the oil industry and Diesel must not be used. Diesel forms a film in the surface of the connections and prevents a correct attachment of the running dope to the threads, risking the correct running and sealability of the connection.
If you want to remove it completely follow the next steps.
Cold weather (near or under 0 Celsius):
As you can't use liquid water in order to remove the dope, you must use steam, so apply hot steam to the connection using a steam hydro jet and try to remove the dope in excess using a brush with plastic (non metallic) bristles.
Warm weather: It's easier to remove it completely.
1.- Use a water hydro jet to remove the excess of storage compound in pin and box.
2.- Brush gently the connections, using a brush with plastic (non metallic) bristles, with a soap solution (the same soap that you use to clean your clothes).
3.- Remove the soap solution again with a water hydro jet.
It's important to notice that storage grease must be removed before running beacuse it doesn't have sealing and lubricanting properties. Also, storage compound must be replaced at least once in a year in order to inspect the connections.
I hope that it will help you.
