The Green Chemistry Team is issuing the Chemical Selection Guide Version 5, which replaces all previous versions and it now contains 500 chemicals used in chemical development.
The purpose of the guide is to provide an awareness of environmental impact when using the listed chemicals and to give a choice to facilitate in the selection of chemicals with minimum environmental impact. The guide classifies each chemical as Green, Yellow, or Red. The meaning of the classifications is as follows:
Green: Environmentally acceptable
Yellow: Conditionally acceptable. Discussion with Global Safety & Environment (GSE) is recommended.
Red: Use caution. If possible consider alternative. Discussion with GSE is required.
The guide is not meant to be a list of prohibited substances. Rather, it is a tool to assist in the selection of chemicals, while taking environmental factors into consideration. Note that whenever environmental information was not available and a classification could not be made based on scientific data, the default classification of Yellow was used. The Chemical Selection Guide is available in an Excel spreadsheet format. Like any spreadsheet, the information is searchable and sortable. A total of four tabs are included in the guide and the tabs contain the following information:
1st Tab – Instruction – contains definition of each column in the Guide and instructions on how to use the guide.
2nd Tab – Flowsheet – contains a systematic approach for Green Chemistry classification
3rd Tab – Summary Guide – contains a condensed version of the Guideline (sorted by alphabetical order)
4th Tab – Full Guide – contains the Guideline and back-up information (sorted by CAS number)
The guide will be periodically reviewed, modified and/or added to maintain it ever-green.
