Thread: Amse b16.5 flanges manufactured with plate materials

  1. Amse b16.5 flanges manufactured with plate materials

    Dear all;

    I need help with ASME B16.5 Flanges manufacturing.
    We have a very hard material requirements imposed by our client. Because of that we cannot achieve these requirements for forging materials.

    In this situation we would like to manufacture ASME B16.5 Welding Neck Flanges by machining plates. This is not allowed by ASME B16.5-5.1(paragraph 13); but I want to ask if there is any exception or method (stress calculation; material testing...) that can allow us to use plate for manufacture flanges keeping ASME requirements.

    I would be very grateful if someone can help me.

    Thanks in advance

    Kind regards.

    No* there isnt* for B16.5 flanges. You may reside to ASME VIII Div 1 app. 2* but I doubt if there's an excpetion there. You also need to ask yourtself if you really this. The quality of the flange* esp. wrt the shear forces* will become drastically less when using plate material. What 'hard' mateterial requirements do you have?

  5. ASME VIII-1 app. allows to machine flanges from Plat* but the restrictions make it very difficult to practically do that. One time we made large ring flanges from plate* but this was for AWWA not ASME.
    I do agree with ThaMaestro that you maybe need to ask yourself whether you really do need to make flanges from plate? What could the parts give you rather than the forgings?

    The problem is that the material requisites from client are not so easy to find in forgings. Finally discussing this with client change some requisites that wasn´t really needded. They always ask for everything* even if they need nothing.

    In any case many thanks for your answers.
