Thread: Best way for Sw well log upscaling & 3D water saturation modeling in petrel

  1. Best way for Sw well log upscaling & 3D water saturation modeling in petrel

    Dear All
I search for a optimum method for water saturation well log (from petrophysics interpretation) upscaling in petrel
I found that we should consider the effect of clay bound water or any other clay issues in well log upscaling (may be a coefficient?!)
Please help me in this matter.
Also about the geostatistical method for this type of Sw which is result of well log interpretation (I know that we should use porosity
as a trend) but I want to find the best algorithm in this matter.
    Thank you in advance.
    Best Regards

    Hi,

Most of the time we don't upscale sw logs because I would assume that you have porosity-perm model upscale and running. With leverets-j or pseudo j , you can directly input in and walla! You would have your sw model. Bear in mind that, modeling your dealing with courser resolutions thus they're bound to have uncertainty.

to upscale Sw log from well, better to consider pore volume

but usually the Sw is calculated directly in model, not upscaled nor distributed.

Using saturation height function is the simplest way of doing it

if you are using Petrel it should have algorithm/module where water volume in the cells (hence STOIIP in the model) is preserved when you are upscaling rock properties. If at the end Res engineer simplifies it just to keep STOIIP about right than need to discuss with him/her first
