Function of lead sheathed on underground cable??

What is the function of lead sheathed on underground cable (N2XSEKBY) other than protection from water and salt ?

Usually Lead Sheath cable , LC is used to protect cables from soil contamination or chemical attack.

In my opinion, cable protection from water and salt, it's better to use marine type cable.

now a days EPR is being used (instead of lead sheath), as this is latest technology
