Thread: Max. External Pressure of Pressure Vessel's Shell/Head

  1. Max. External Pressure of Pressure Vessel's Shell/Head

    Dear all members,

Please help me, how to calculate the max. external pressure of shell and head in pressure vessel?
    where
    internal design pressure: 45psi
    Design temperature: 265 deg. F
    inside diameter: 60 in
    corrosion allowance: 0 in
    shell length: 81 in
    design external pressure: 4.57psi
    nominal shell thickness: 0.135 in

    Thanks

    Dear Naya Din,
To calculate MAEP for shell, you can use UG-28 ASME Section VIII-Div. 1.

To calculate MAEP for head, you can use UG-33 ASME Section VIII-Div. 1.

    Hope this help.

    Dear Captain Tony,

Thank you for your reply. I have a problem to calculate equivalent length of the shell.

Basically, the equivalent length of the shell = (The length from T to T) + 1/3*(2*the depth of the head)

    Example: A Horizontal Pressure Vessel, T to T = 3000 mm, ID = 1500 mm, 2:1 Elliptical Head

So that, the depth of the 2:1 elliptical head = 1/4 ID = 1500/4 =375 mm
The equivalent length of the shell shall be = 3000 + 1/3(2*375) = 3250 mm

    Hope this help.
