Smile Just join Schlumberger as a Junior Drilling Engineer

I just joined Schlumberger as a Junior Drilling Engineer/ Drilling Engineer trainee.

For the first 2 yrs, I'll be assigned to work in a field as:
    - MWD/LWD Field Engineer for one an a half year
    - DD-Trainee/ Second hand Directional Driller for 1/2 -1 yrs

After 2 yrs, I'll be assigned as a drilling engineer.

Since this is a new career path of SLB, could you please share the advantages/disadvantages of this postion compare to Oil company drilling engineer?

    and,

After 4-6 yrs experiences, Is it a good idea to join oil company?

Do you know what location you are assigned to yet?

Many locations have a shortage of LWD engineers so you may find it difficult to go to DD after 18 months, do you have any well site experience?

If you have limited experience I would definitely recommend it. It will be tough to start with (locations in Africa push the newbies pretty hard) but when you get into the office as a drilling engineer you'll be set up for a successful career, either within Sclumb or with another company.

(I did 4 years MWD/LWD/DD with Schlumb and then got a job for an operator as a DE).

Its always advisable to join a NOC and not a service company , if you are looking for job security and progress, but there may be different opinions in terms of monetary benefit. NOC's are slow to implement technology, but they are like winners in the long runs. Petroleum industry still follows the rule of thumb in most of the operations and not just the fancy technology, which are promoted by service providers. In a NOC, you will become , good manager and engineer, the ups and downs will show you how to deal with situations and people of different perspective.
