Minimum safety distances
Hello all;
I case of design of Petroleum storage sites (above ground storage tanks), can anyone guide me to the minimu safety distance requirements for buildings and other related facilities from the tanks?
I'd also very much appreciate if you'd let me know which is the applicable code/ standard for this.
many thanks,
-
Locate any tankage containing hydrocarbon or other combustible fluids or gasses a minimum distance of 250'-0" (115m) from any process unit, rail loading facility or truck loading facility.
-
Thanks for your response. However, what I am looking for is the minimum distance from a Petroleum tank and an Office building. Can you also let me know the code reference to what you have stated above.
Regards,
-
Sandy
It is best to go for consequence analysis of the said tank and calculate the affected area for the worst case scenario. and then locate the office outside that area
-
First determine the consequence analysis results using DNV-PHAST or SHELL-FRED or ALOHA... find the distance of the impact,,,,, then proceed...
-
GASCO experience as well as U. S. OSHA Part 1910 and the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) Code No. 30, but see your local rules as well!
-
Thanks for the responses. But you see the tank and the building is already there, what I am trying to comment is if it is safe for the building to be permanently manned? ANother question that comes to my mind is the access to the fire-fighting equipment in case of fire.
-
OK - do what Dawood suggested or send me the plot plan of facility.
-
If the facility is already there still u need to follow same procedure, go for consequence analysis and determine blast overpressures, probable dostances covered by missile fragments and thermal radii. Then ensure that building is constructed against the temp and pressure it may be exposed to.
-
See NFPA 30, For buidings refer industrial risk insurance guidline.
-
look for this doc on www.hse.gov.uk " Location and design of occupied buildings at major accident hazard establishments"
-
Also - see API RP 752 Management of Hazards Associated with Location of Process Plant, and API RP 753 Management of Hazards Associated with Location of Process Plant Portable Buildings

Hello All
can anyone helpe me to the minimum safety distance requirements for Electrical sub (144 kV or 250 kV) and other related facilities from the gas plant or oil storage facilities
I'd also very much appreciate if you'd let me know which is the applicable code/ standard for this.
Thanks

for substations and buildings offices or administrative distance is 15 m for quick check
for combustible liquid storage tanks and buildings distance is 76 m
for combustible liquid storage tanks and control room 45 m
for combustible liquid storage tanks and pumping room 30 m
i do hope the information is usefull

Hi bro where do you get this figures.?
Is it standard figures or by calculations.?
-
sorry i didnt answer sooner
Those numbers have beeen around since quite some time and are widely used at least for
prelininary plot plant development, some references are
Hazard clasification of Process operations for spacing requirements
Plant layout and spacing for oil and chemical plants hydrocarbon processing 1981
Industrial Plant Insurers IRI june 1991
and there are alot more but i dont have them handy
i hope this could help
