    Hello,

    I have a problem and want urgent advice. I have seen that there can be an allowable stress increase of 20 % for pressure vessel design when combined with transient loads such as seismic. However, what happens if the basic seismic load is calculated by UBC 97. ASME load combinations are allowable stress design and UBC stipulates to use E/1.4 or 0.7E for allowable stress design. But UBC also stipulates that unless combined with live loads the allowable stress cannot be increased. In case Seismic load is calculated by UBC, I feel 20% increase in allowable stress as per ASME should not be allowed. I would like your views on this please.
