    Dear Mattegm,

    Based on my own experience, I suggest you to consider modifying your design to make better use of “volume”. If you want to, write to me to emprendimiento2009@gmail.com, I can provide you a sketch of a more convenient arrangement, free of charge…

    If you cannot modify the design (e.g. because it is a client´s requirement), proceed as follows:

    A. Residence time in separation chamber = not less than 20 minutes, preferably 30 minutes.

    B. Oil chamber:
    LLLL to bottom: 1 to 1,5 minutes, considering a minimum of 70 to 90 mm.
    LLLL to LLL: 70 to 90 mm, considering a minimum of about 0,5 to 1 minute.
    LLL to NLL: 70 to 90 mm, considering a minimum of about 0,5 to 1 minute.
    NLL to HLL: 70 to 90 mm, considering a minimum of about 0,5 to 1 minute.
    HLL to HHLL: 1 to 1,5 minutes, considering a minimum of 70 to 90 mm.

    I assumed that LLLL and HHLL will trigger actions such as closing of downstream/ upstream shutdown valves and that LLL and HLL will produce alarms. Since the P&ID does not shown upstream and downstream facilities, I do not know if I am right.

    C. Water chamber: same criteria suggested for B, except that height difference between LLL and center line of pump's suction shall be enough to satisfy the pump's NPSH. The height difference in question also depends of vessel supports height, vessel and pump installation level, etc.

    D. Feed inlet: if you expect any gases, it should enter above the separation chamber liquid level. If not, leave it as shown.

    E. Baffle height: assuming you do not expect gases in the feed, set baffle height at 80% of vessel diameter.
