I would like to get the opinion of forum members with regard to assignment of alarm priority for basic process control tags. I understand that usually priority is assigned based of severity of consequence and time to respond. However with respect to PV Bad alarm which indicate transmitter failure, should the priority of this alarm be equal to the highest priority alarm associate with that tag?

Example, if TI transmitter has a HI alarm with priority 'High' then the associate PV Bad alarm priority should also be 'High'. I have seen this philosophy used on a number of offshore DCS systems in the UK North Sea. It was my understanding this came from EEMUA 191 however I cannot find any reference to PV Bad alarm priorities in the document.

I would very much like to know which standard this particular guidance or standard this guidance has been taken from. Thanks for you assistance.
