Cathodic protection is a technique used to control the corrosion of metal surface by making it the cathode of an electrochemical cell. It can be applied to both buried and submerged metallic surfaces. It is considered as secondary corrosion control because it is used in conjunction with coatings. CP system protects a wide range of metallic structures in various environments. The primary benefit cathodic protection offers over other anti corrosion is its ability to deployed merely by the maintenance of a direct current circuit.

Cathodic protection is applied on: steel water of fuel pipeline and steel storage tank such as home water heaters, ship and boat hulls, offshore oil. Galvanized steel can also be used, in which a sacrificial coating of zinc on steel parts protects them from rust. CP is another means to prevent stress corrosion *****ing. Vessels pipelines and tank used to store or transport liquids can also be protected on their internal surfaces by the used of cathodic protection.
